Truck Central Open for Business

Thursday 31 January 2019

Work on Darwin’s Truck Central development is now complete with the estate opened for business on the 22nd January 2019.

This 16 hectare purpose built site is situated on the corner of Tiger Brennan Drive and Wishart Road between Darwin and Palmerston. The estate is a transport and logistics hub with easy access to Darwin’s East Arm Wharf and the International Airport.

A joint-venture between Land Development Corporation and local Developer Ostojic Group, this development demonstrated how Government enterprise and the private sector can come together to successfully deliver benefits to the NT economy.

Key outcomes of Truck Central include delivering one of the largest Road Train Assembly Areas (RTAA) in Australia and a new Heavy Vehicle Inspection Facility (HVIF) to replace the aging asset at Parap. These two facilities are jointly funded, with 50% of the development costs being met by the Australian Government through Round 5 of the Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program and the balance by the Northern Territory Government and Land Development Corporation.

The RTAA comprises a 3.2 hectare concrete hardstand to allow truck operators a safe off road space to park and reassemble configurations for single combination deliveries or to rest safely off road. The (RTAA) provides 55 heavy transport parking bays including 17 bays for triple road trains and a further 11 wider bays for reconfiguration and assembly of trailers. It also includes a dual height loading ramp for stacking of trailers plus an additional 27 bays for smaller configurations such as B-doubles, semi-trailers and dolly parking.

Truck Central provides 22 lots for the clustering of transport and industrial uses, including heavy vehicle sales, depots, tyres and servicing workshops. The Estate provides the perfect opportunity for purchasers to leverage business from the nearby transport facilities. In a major coup for the estate, BP Australia has developed a Truck Stop offering light and heavy vehicle refuelling, restaurant and driver fatigue management amenities.

To date, over $52 million has already been invested in the Truck Central estate.  Further investment will ramp up as the remaining 22 lots are developed.
